What is TMD/TMJ?
The term TMJ stands for your temporomandibular joints. Your temporomandibular joints are the joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull. They are the joints you use when you chew and speak. Overuse of these joints can result in a TMD, or temporomandibular disorder.
Signs that you are suffering from a temporomandibular disorder may include:
- Jaw pain
- Stuffy ears
- Facial swelling
- Frequent headaches
- Frequent neck aches
- Locked jaw or a limited opening of the mouth.
- A clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves
- Muscle spasms
- A change in the alignment of top and bottom teeth
TMDs can be very uncomfortable and hard to live with, but at Mahoney Dentistry near Leduc and Camrose, we can offer meaningful TMD treatment.
At our Wetaskiwin practice, we utilize the latest T-Scan technology to diagnose temporomandibular disorders. T-Scan is a computerized bite analysis system that can tell Dr. Mahoney where your main bite contacts are. Using this information, Dr. Mahoney can spot harmful contacts and help assuage your TMD problem by eliminating them with a night guard.
Night Guards and TMDs
TMDs are often caused by teeth grinding. Some patients grind their teeth while they sleep. Grinding can cause tooth damage and can lead to an overuse of the temporomandibular joints. Our night guards are specially crafted for each patient to eliminate grinding and to help your TMJ heal. Night guards are available to all of our patients in the Alberta area and can help treat and prevent TMJ problems.
