What is TMD/TMJ?
The term “TMJ” stands for your temporomandibular joint(s). Your temporomandibular joints are the joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull. They are the joints you use when you chew and speak. A misalignment of these joints can result in a TMD, or temporomandibular disorder. The term “TMJ” can also be used to refer to the disorder.
There are several symptoms of TMD, many of which are common to a variety of disorders. When reading this list, pay particular attention to the symptoms that specifically center on your jaw function. Signs that you are suffering from temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, may include:
- Jaw pain
- Stuffy ears
- Facial swelling
- Frequent headaches
- Frequent neck aches
- Locked jaw or a limited opening of the mouth.
- A clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves
- Muscle spasms
- A change in the alignment of top and bottom teeth
We will carefully evaluate the symptoms you are experiencing and ensure an accurate diagnosis.
TMD can be very uncomfortable and hard to live with, but at Dr. Mahoney’s office, we offer effective TMJ treatment to improve your overall quality of life.
Night Guards and TMDs
TMDs are often caused by teeth grinding. You may grind your teeth while you sleep. Grinding can cause tooth damage and can lead to an overuse of the temporomandibular joints. Our night guards are crafted to eliminate grinding and to help your TMJ heal.
Night guards are available to anyone in the Alberta area and are a great TMJ treatment that can help prevent TMJ problems.
